Friday, November 6, 2009

Yesterday was a continuation of the two days before, with Howard's feeling a considerable relief from pain and more energetic. The stuff did wear thin by evening, though: perhaps she tired herself out, overly exerting. Who wouldn't! But all of a sudden she was spent, ready for bed.

She is still concerned about how Decadron distorts her perception, especially when she's maneuvering her chair. The joystick is so sensitive that the slightest misjudgment can cause an accident. Yesterday she had too many close calls.

So now we're in the midst of a conversation about a choice between two kinds of quality of life: reduced pain with a mild shift in perception or acute pain without mental distortions. Howard says as long as the mental distortions don't get any worse, she'll mostly likely stick with the drug, but it had not occurred to us before that the quality of life issue could get subdivided.

One thing we've learned over these months: nothing stays the same. Every decision made is for the moment only. Even life definitions can change. The only thing you can be absolutely sure of is this too will pass. Spring, summer, fall, winter, spring, summer....

Enjoy your Friday.

Hey Girls,
Why don't you experiment with taking the decadron @ nite or later in the day if it is only 1 pill a day? Terri
