Maggie and I returned home yesterday afternoon.  I didn't want to make a public announcement that nobody would be at home so I didn't announce when we'd be leaving for our visit with Bill and Vickie.

It was a loving, healing, magical time with our family.  They fed me, pampered me, entertained me and gave me plenty of space and time to be quiet and sleep.  Vickie's culinary skills are exceptional to begin with, but over the top while I was there with something special and prepared from scratch at every meal.

One side of me wanted to stay another week, but I knew the longer we stayed, the more difficult it would be to come home and try to regroup.  With it being Sunday afternoon, their returning to their normal business routine on Monday, it was an ideal time to head back and do what needs to be done.

It's time now to begin the difficult stuff:  the Will and all the business stuff made necessary when someone dies.  I will go at this slowly, one thing at a time and make sure I get plenty of rest and restoration between tasks.

Oh, and this: during the ten months Howard was in hospice, knowing it was not possible for me to paint I put my art on hold.  Saturday morning after that tremendous rain, looking out the glass doors to their deck, the clouds were just beginning to break over a horse farm adjoining their property.  I took out my watercolor travel kit and while Vickie was making breakfast, did a small watercolor of that scene.  It was my first painting back.  The family rejoiced and so did I.

I gave the painting to them.  There will be more.

Enjoy your Monday.

  1. I am so happy you had the chance to spend time with family and rest up and paint again. Being on the receiving end of caregiving must have been so good for you. And hurray that you are painting again...I'm sure it will be healing for you.

I hope all the business you need to see to goes smoothly.

    Love,
    Jennifer
